The story
Ragnar captures Athelstan, a Christian monk, during a raid on England. Over the years captor and captive become close friends, each learning the other's faith and way of life. After Athelstan's death, Ragnar wears his cross: a symbol of a friendship that crossed the line between the Norse and Christian worlds.
